: : I've made several rugs using T-shirts. I cut the strips by hand. The t-shirt strips roll into nice round strips and are very nice to work with.
: Finally found someone to talk to about this!!! (Every forum where I brought this up so far thought I was nuts to want to use tee shirts) I, too saw the MarthaS show and now I want to draw quilt motifs on the mesh and hook them. Hey, help me please. What size mesh or backing to you recommend? What size, style of hook? How wide the tee shirt material? How high the loops? Etc. Will really appreciate the hand up to get me going. --BD
Bev, I use burlap backing and have tried a variety of weaves. The best seems to be a weave tight enough that the threads hold your strips quite snug. I cut my strips about 1cm wide [depending on the thickness of the t-shirt]. I use a crochet hook, size 3mm. I pull up the loops about 1 cm, maybe a bit higher. The strip gets stretched slightly as you work it and it will shrink back. Hope this helps.
