There is a nice chart on overdyeing wool in the book Hook Me a Story, by Deanne Fitzpatrick, I have overdyed from light to dark, but not the opposite. I have lightened dark wool by simmering it in water with about a tablespoon of laundry soap, to bleed out some of the colour. When the colour is light enough , i then simmer it again in clear water with about 2 Tbsp of vinegar to set the new colour. Make sure you open your windows when doing this, the last time I did this the smell of sulphur was unimagineable.
