"PRIMITIVE FLOWERS"
Designed by Jane
Hooked by Norma Flodman
Primitive Flowers was inspired by antique hooked rugs. All of the flowers in this pattern were selected from rugs featured in two books, "American Rugs", by Estelle H. Reis (1950), and "Collecting Hooked Rugs", by Elizabeth Waugh and Edith Foley (1927). The pattern is very simple and can be hooked as a sampler, each flower a different color.
When most of these old rugs were made, hookers had very few colors to work with. Black, brown, and grey were predominate because these were the practical colors used in clothing. The reds found in the early rugs were from the res flannel underwear so popular with men at that time. Other colors were dyed from roots, vegetables, bark, flowers, fruits , and berries.
