I would bind it and tape it. Make sure you do it on a table rather than working with it on your lap. There is another binding method where you cut the excess backing to 1 1/2" after having zig zaged 3 rows. Fold the excess in half on the right side, fold it agin in half on the right side, then either whip stitch it or do the herringbonestitch. Doing it this way eliminates having to use tape and also cording.
