I just finished some hot pads too, on one i did it similar to what Basha suggested, it turned out very well. The others I decided to leave about one inch of burlap(already stitched around the edge so it wouldn't ravel), I turned it under a bit and then turned it under all the way under the back. (Thanks for the info Joan!) and then sewed it with tiny slipstitches by hand. This is the way the Cheticamp hooked hotpads are, and they are for hotpads, not sure if they would be as sturdy as the whipstitched or bound ones, but for hot pads they would probably be okay. I have a Cheticamp hot pad about 30 years old, and the only problem with it is that is has faded.
